Vararo – Pizzoni di Laveno – Monte La Tegia – Passo del Cuvignone – Bocchetta

Starting point: Vararo, Cittiglio, località Casere
A panoramic ridge walk from Vararo over Passo Cuveglione. The Grobner Family took this walk with their 3 boys under 10 had this to say about this walk:
"A ridge walk from Vararo over Passo Cuveglione. The Lake seems a Norwegian fjord, with beech leaves strewn over the remains of ice or snow. This is a comfortable slog over five little peaks where also in winter you will find lizards and insects."
It begins at the Trattoria Alpino, on Via Scuole in Vararo, takes in Gaggiolo, then ascends above Vararo to intersect the SP 8 (Direction Cuvignone). It then follows a track along the ridge of the Pizzoni di Laveno, continues over Passo Barbe (873m) Boca de Carscina (mt. 1025) and Monte La Tegia (mt. 1106). To finish, descend to the SP 8 at Passo del Cuvignone (mt. 1050), turn right in the direction of Cittiglio to join the 3V at Bochetta (1036m). Duration 1-5 hours, distance 3 km, ascent 300m.

  • May 17th 2009: Burnley/Steinberger, Ehrlich/Bonfiglio, Bielski did this circular walk in the opposite direction with kids aged 5-12. We parked at the Trattoria Gigliola in Vararo and followed the signposted Path No 12 up to Monte La Tegia, Boca di Carsina, Passo Barbe, over the classic Pizzoni di Laveno and came back to Vararo passing the Trattoria Alpino on our way back to the Trattoria Gigliola. The section from Vararo to Passo Barbe has some steep climbs and drop-offs in both directions. The descent in that direction would be quite a challenge and we preferred to avoid it, as it was in the full sun. The Pizzoni walk back to Vararo was also steep but fairly cool as it ran through huge beeches, oak and chestnuts. The descent to Vararo was spectacular, white stone cliffs, the view up to Monte La Crochetta behind us, sheep bells tinkling, grassy meadows full of wildflowers. On the way home we saw 2 huge vipers nestling in the sun. This was a phenomenal walk but a very tough one, definitely not for kids under 5 or inexperienced walkers. It took us 5 hours, rest stops included. The cioccolata calda and the meal by the fireplace at the Trattoria Gigliola was our well deserved reward.

Vararo - Laveno

Below the Trattoria Gigliola in Vararo there is a signposted 3V path which descends to Laveno. Duration about 45 minutes

Vararo - Monte La Crochetta

  • Family De Groeve did this walk with their 3 kids aged 7 and 5 and had this to say: "We parked in Vararo and walked up to the cross where the paragliders take off from (Monte La Crochetta). It was very well signposted… Very nice trail with spectacular views, very safe. It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to go up. … kids did it really well (with a bit of complaining at the steepest part which was in the full sun for about 30 minutes). I would definitely recommend it though."

Pizzoni di Laveno - Monte Nudo

Vararo, Cittiglio, località Casere (Gigliola).Follow signposts for Passo del Cuvignone (1,30 ore) and Monte Borghè to Monte Nudo (45 minuti).
*The trail to the ridge is for experts

(Circa 1 h. 15)
At 1227 metres, Punta di Mezzo is the "summit" of the Campo dei Fiori. This walk starts off at Piazzale Belvedere, about 500m from the Osservatorio Astronomico Schiapparelli. The Sentiero n.7 " Punta di Mezzo "is signposted. Don't rush past the turnoff for the Punto Panoramico which is an observation point very close to the path. After this, the path takes you along a steep incline with sharp dropoffs on your right. Small children will need to be carried; everyone else just needs to be careful. Follow the signposts to the Punta di Mezzo. Most people flop down on the grass to enjoy the view but the peak itself is about ten minutes on. You can either return the way you came or complete the circle by following signposts for Sentiero No 1 to Piazzale Belvedere.

  • On sunny weekends it can be very hard to find a parking spot.
  • Apparently there can be sudden, violent gusts of wind
  • Good picnic spot with some shelter (tiny "refugio")
  • Carpeted with wildflowers in spring
  • Good departure point for a mountainbiking trip or longer walk (3h) to the Forte di Orino

Laveno and Cittiglio

Cittiglio Waterfalls

For hot summer days, a cool walk. This location and the climbs to the 2nd and 3rd Falls could be a little dangerous for little ones.
+Sasso del Ferro
The “buckets” of the old Gondelbahn will bring a smile to the heart on any misty winter morning. The mountain top is covered by the ruins of the old ski lifts and is nothing special.
Look up instead at the Paragliders and Deltaplanes in their element…

South of Lago Maggiore

Mottarone

The trip to the Climbing Wall or Klettergärten (just before the Ski lift -schistation about15 m den Kammhinunter) is worth doing even without your own equipment.

The Giardino Alpinia in Alpino: over a thousand Alpine wildflowers

The Natural Park Lagoni di Mercurago

Is also very interesting to visit in the winter, when the shallow lakes freeze over..

Sesto Calende

Riverside walks and bike rides.

There is a road off the Strada Provinciale which starts under the motorway bridge at the edge of Sesto, in the direction of Somma Lombardo; it’s pretty and suitable for pushchairs and bikes. The Strada Provinciale itself is narrow at this point and very dangerous for walkers and bikers.

Golasecca

Golasecca lies in the hills near Sesto Calende. It is the site of a large Iron Age necropolis of the Golasecca civilisation. Shiny black cinerary urns containing ashes of the iron-age dead can be found in local museums. Not far from Golasecca, on a plateau in the woods overlooking the Ticino, there are some prehistoric stone structures beneath the motorway bridge; this is an archaelogical site of the Golasecca Culture. Note that this is not a spectacular site; you will need to bring a vivid imagination with you.

The “Sasso della Preia Buia” near the pretty Roman church of S. Donato is an ancient sacrificial site.

Ticino Park/ Parco del Ticino

Huge fluvial park, best explored by bike. worthwhile Einstiegsstellen am
Ostufer. Watch out for: in the water, water lilies and duckweed, crested grebe, coot; trout, pike, carp; in tidal areas on the shore, marsh reeds, yellow irises and white willows. On land: poplars, alders, hornbeams oaks, and elms; bushes: hawthorns and privets. Birds: turtledoves, nightingales, thrushes animals: hares, foxes and martens live, hedgehogs

Rocca d’Angera

The Rocca is a perfectly preserved medieval fortress on the Quirico hill in Angera. Highlights are the Sala del Giudizio and the view from the tower.

S. Quirico

A classic Sunday afternoon stroll. The path begins by the Cemetery in Ranco.

Santa Caterina del Sasso

This XII century monastery clings to a cliff face above Lago Maggiore. You can get to it from the lake road between Arolo and Reno…
